How to Use Templates

Table of contents

Templates are pre-developed page layouts and messages that may be used during the writing, editing, and reviewing of Climate Lab wiki pages. There are several different types of templates, including Layout Templates and Message Box Templates.  Layout Templates provide guidance to users on how to organize pages on particular topics by producing  a basic structure for an article in order to maintain consistency among similar types of articles.  Message Box Templates help improve the quality of existing articles by allowing users to indicate possible errors in content or citation within an article.

  • To insert a template into an article, click the "Templates" button in your page editor and select the appropriate template for your article. The template will appear within the wiki page.  In the case of Message Box templates, you will need to save the page to see the message box; when the page is still open for editing, the message box will appear only as a text script.

Available templates

Climate Lab has several layout and message box templates that have already been created.  They can be accessed by clicking the Template button on the page editor.

Layout templates

Layout Templates are based on the notion that pages about certain topics often share a similar layout with some basic common sections.  They provide a general framework for articles of related content and focus, e.g. technology, policy, people, places.  Layout Templates are primarily used in the process of creating a new article. While users are strongly encouraged to use the layout templates appropriate to their topic, templates should be seen as a starting point that should be added to and modified as necessary.

  • Clean Technologies : The Clean Technologies template provides a basic layout with relevant page elements for articles pertaining to clean technology.

Message box templates

Message Box Templates are solely utilized during the editing and revision process of a wiki article.  They call attention to articles that may need modification for content or citation in order to improve the quality of the article. Users can insert message box templates into articles to point out errors, lack of proper citation, or copyright violations in order to encourage other users to make appropriate edits.
