Solar Light for Africa (SLA) is a faith-based, non-profit organization based in Norcross, GA, that is dedicated to spreading solar power to public facilities in rural African regions. Through solar provision projects, SLA increases economic productivity and enables students to study beyond daylight hours.

Founded in 1997 by retired Episcopal Bishop Alden Hathaway, SLA has provided light and power to more than 2,400 facilities in rural regions of East Africa, including medical clinics, orphanages, schools, churches, and homes. 1 SLA chooses site locations based on need, and promotes civic engagement projects that work to provide long-term benefits for the local community. 2Most SLA projects to date are in East Africa in the countries of Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, but several West African projects have been completed or are planned to take place in 2009. 3

The USAID has established a partnership with Solar Light for Africa on low-cost solar lighting and water purification systems for rural hospitals, schools, and orphanages in East Africa. The USAID awarded $300,000 to SLA in 2004 through SLA’s partner organization Global Environment and Technology Foundation (GETF), located in Alexandria, Virginia 4. SLA also works in partnership with the company Solar Energy Uganda (SEU), which engages the local community in installation and maintenance of solar units. 5
