The World Resources Institute is a non-partisan environmental think tank based in Washington, DC that performs research and field work on global environmental issues.  According to the Institution's website, WRI organizes its programming around 4 key goals:

  • "People & Ecosystems: Reverse rapid degradation of ecosystems and assure their capacity to provide humans with needed goods and services.
  • Governance: Empower people and support institutions to foster environmentally sound and socially equitable decision-making.
  • Climate Protection: Protect the global climate system from further harm due to emissions of greenhouse gases and help humanity and the natural world adapt to unavoidable climate change.
  • Markets & Enterprise: Harness markets and enterprise to expand economic opportunity and protect the environment." 1

Along with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, WRI has worked for ten years developing a tool called the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative that provides GHG accounting information on nearly every GHG program and standard that is currently in place worldwide. 2

WRI is also a founding member and supporter of the United States Climate Action Partnership, an alliance of businesses and climate and environmental groups that urges for legislative action on national greenhouse emissions cuts. WRI is a strong supporter of the “USCAP Blueprint,” a plan of legislative action issued on January 15, 2009 that was developed by USCAP members over a two-year time period. Among other things the plan supports cap and trade systems, free allowances for certain companies, and investment in carbon capture and storage. 3
